Itinerary 3 - A Taste of Cilento

Day One: Arrival at Naples airport (flights not included) where you will be collected by small private coach and taken on the two hour transfer to the hotel. We will walk to the local piazza dominated by the church of San Marco. Here we will lunch together in the square at the local pizzeria. Afterwards, there will be time to explore San Marco and the medieval town of Castellabate. A great spot for pre dinner aperitifs. If you want a more relaxing afternoon you have the opportunity to visit the recently opened modern spa, where you can experience the floatation pools, hydrotherapy pool, saunas and steam rooms.

Day Two:  After a coffee stop at the fishing village of Acciaroli, where Ernest Hemmingway was inspired to write ‘Old Man and the Sea’ today we head to Pioppi the birthplace of the ‘Mediterranean Diet’. Here we will visit the restaurant of ‘Delia’ who was housekeeper to American Doctor, Ancel Keys and taught him all the secrets of cooking the Mediterranean way before he wrote his best seller ‘How to Eat Well and Stay Well the Mediterranean Way’. We will then drive down to Camerota/Palinuro for a scenic boat ride along the stunning limestone coastline of the Costa Infreschi.

Day Three: Today we head north to the village of Roccadaspide, dominated by the castle dating back to 13th century, built by Frederick II. Here you are the guests of the Marquis Guiliani who will give a private guided tour of his castle. This will be a chance to experience village life on the interior of the Cilento National Park. The minibus will then take you to Giungano where you will visit a pretty restaurant in the countryside of the National Park and will be welcomed with apperitifs and local wine. You will then have the opportunity to make your own pasta and sauces with the guided tuition of the local ladies. Here we will eat our lunch together on the terrace with spectacular views.

Day Four: We turn the clock back 2500 years today to visit the Greek Temples at Paestum. Silvia, our guide, brings the whole area to life with a fascinating guided tour. This area of southern Italy was dominated by the Greeks prior to the Romans and was known as ‘Magna Grecia’.
The cultural tour will be followed by lunch in the region where Buffalo Mozzarella of Campania is produced. You will see the water buffalos and taste their products of the creamiest mozzarella and yogurts – not forgetting the ice cream of course!

Day Five: Today you are free to explore the local area with a walk up 350m to the medieval village of Castellabate, voted one of Italy’s most beautiful villages or to Santa Maria. Or you can take an interesting walk through the pine woods to Punta Licosa.  Here you can appreciate nature at its best in the tranquil environment of coastline and woods.  If however, you would like to visit Amalfi, Ravello, Pompeii or Naples, this can be organized by a private transfer, at an additional cost.
